krongyllen, Stockholm, Johan III, 1570
In 1569, King Johan III of Sweden introduced the new gold krongyllen coin. This was the second gold denomination issued in Sweden, after Erik XIV’s ungersk gyllen in 1568. The krongyllen is a lower denomination and was minted between 1569 and 1573.
The krongyllen is slightly smaller in size than the ungersk gyllen coin, but both denominations have the king’s portrait on the obverse (front). The small national coat of arms on the reverse (back) of krongyllen coins instead of the large one makes it easy to distinguish between the denominations.
