Lead seal, Belgium, Mechelen, 14th century
This product seal for textiles weighs 7 grams and comes from the city of Mechelen in modern-day Belgium. The motif is made up of the city’s medieval coat of arms, in the form of three vertical lines inside a shield. Its stylistic features mean it can be dated back to the 14th century. The back of the seal shows a bishop’s crosier (staff).
This seal was found during an archaeological dig at Hovgården on the island of Adelsö in the early 1990s, together with lots of other Viking and medieval artefacts.
