1 gyllen, Uppsala, Gustav I Vasa, 1523

The display case shows a silver gyllen coin minted in Uppsala in 1523. On the obverse (front) is the king with harness, mantle, crown, sword and orb. In front of the king is a four-part shield with the symbol of the Vasa dynasty, the vase (a sheaf of grain), in the first and fourth panels and two crossed arrows in the second and third panels. The inscription (text) does not mention the king's name but the saint St Erik.

The reverse shows the crowned small coat of arms. The legend mentions the mint town VPSAL, i.e. Uppsala, and the year 1523. The same year that the coin was minted, Gustav Vasa was elected king in Strängnäs. It has been suggested that the coin may have been issued to mark the election of the king.
