Penning, Svealand, Knut långe, 1229–1234
This coin shows a standard and the letters VICA. The standard symbolises conquest, victory and supremacy. Attached to a pole, it was used in the field.
The letters VICA can be interpreted as an abbreviation for vicarius (= deputy) and may refer to Jarl Ulf Fase. If we reverse the order of the letters, this gives us CIV/itas/ A/rosiensis/ (= City of Aros), in this case the mint of Östra Aros (now Uppsala).
This specimen was found in a hoard along with several other Svealand pennings from the time of Knut the Tall and Ulf. The hoard was found when a cemetery wall in Eskilstuna, Södermanland, was demolished in 1879.
