Penning, Svealand, Knut Eriksson, 1167–1196

This halved coin found in the Skänninge grave depicts the king with hair.

There was a well-attended market in Skänninge where people from Östergötland and Västergötland met to exchange, buy and sell goods. But coins were worth different amounts at this time depending on which part of the country they came from. For instance, a Svealand penning was worth the same as two Götaland pennings, so some coins were divided in half.

No coins issued in Västra Götaland were found in the Skänninge grave. That said, there are 35 coins that were divided into smaller pieces to make them equivalent to a Götaland penning.
