Klippe, Denmark, Malmö, Kristian II, 1518–1522

This is a klipping issued by Kristian II. From 1518, klippings containing copper were struck at the Malmö mint and issued in large quantities during the Danish invasion of 1520.

Kristian II was King of Denmark and Norway from 1513 to 1523, and of Sweden from 1520 to 1521. Gustav Eriksson Vasa had similar coins minted during his rebellion against the Danes, and these difficult to tell apart from the Danish ones. One side shows an image of a king, and the other the Danish coat of arms with three lions. Bad coins were to be blamed on the Danes.

A hoard of coins found in Västerås in 1911 contained more than 1,200 klippings – both the Danish originals and the reminted Swedish coins.
