Rolled strip, lead

Bracteates are one-sided coins that were struck with a single hammer against a soft base. The base was placed under the silver plate to cushion the impact of the hammer and thus enable the one-sided striking. Some mints, such as Lödöse, used leather as a base. In the Örebro mint, lead was used.

This folded lead strip was found during excavations of the Bromsgården neighbourhood in Örebro. The need for lead was quite high in the mint and perhaps it was intended to further process this strip into embossing material. The lead base could be melted down after minting and then reused.
