4 öre, Narva, Karl XI, 1671

This is a Swedish coin that was made in Estonia. The obverse (front) of the coin that you see here shows the crowned monogram (initials) of Karl XI together with the King’s motto DOMINUS PROTECTOR MEUS – the Lord my protector. On the reverse (back), we see the coat of arms of the city of Riga with two fish, three spheres, a straight sword and a scimitar. This coat of arms was established by Johan III in 1585.

Almost 25 years of war between Sweden and Russia came to an end in 1595. The town of Narva in Estonia became part of Sweden with what is known as the Peace of Teusina. The new Swedish area was authorised to issue coins, and production took place between 1670 and 1672.
