Money box, Göteborgs sparbank

Throughout history, people have saved their assets for the future in different ways. In the 19th century, savings banks began to be established around the world, with Sweden's first savings bank founded in Gothenburg in 1820. Banks made it easier for ordinary people to save money in an organised and secure way. Some of them gave out money boxes to the depositor but kept the key for a monthly emptying where the deposit was recorded. Annual fees were charged for the bank's costs.

Göteborgs Sparbank issued this box, with the design taken from the city's 17th-century fortification Skansen Kronan.
