Leijonancker weaving mill's token

Daniel Leijonancker (1627-1688) started a linen weaving mill in 1662 and a few years later also a textile mill on Södermalm in Stockholm. Working conditions at the mill were difficult and wages were low.

The token indicates the wool quality ‘Fine’ wool, that is, it is wool from a sheep sheared in autumn. The same type with an R instead of an F indicates ‘Ragg’ wool, meaning that the sheep was shorn in spring.

Leijonancker obtained in 1669 ‘the right to mint copper and hence to mint the coinage tax in order to get help and assistance to maintain his work for the common good and the welfare of the country’. He then issued tokens in the denominations of 1 daler km and 8 öre km.
