5 dukat, Riga, Karl X Gustav, 1654

The motif on the reverse (back) side of this coin is the city of Riga as seen from the river Daugava. The buildings include Riga Castle and the city’s church tower extending up to the sky above the rooftops. The river is crowded with ships, and in the foreground we see a promontory jutting out from the shore on the other side of the water.

The motif on the reverse (back) are more reminiscent of those found in medallic art than on coins. The obverse (front), on the other hand, looks like most coins in higher denominations, with the king depicted in profile.
