Penning, Svealand, Knut Eriksson, 1167–1196
The motif on this silver penning differs from other pennings issued by King Knut in Svealand. It shows the king, who appears to be wearing chain mail, as if equipped for battle. He is holding a sword in his right hand, and a drop-shaped shield for protection in his left.
On his head he is wearing neither a hood nor a helmet, but a royal crown with hanging bands. This coin type is very rare, and there were a couple of variants.
