Florin, Germany, Lübeck, 1432

Gold florins from the Italian city-state of Florence became very popular all over Europe after they began to be issued in the 13th century. As a result of this success, many different states in Europe began to produce their own copies in order to capitalise on the available market opportunity.

This coin is one such replica and was made in Lübeck. The design is broadly identical to an original florin. To the left of the face of Jesus, where the mint mark was usually placed, is the double eagle of Lübeck, revealing that this coin was actually made in Lübeck.
