2 öre, Stockholm, Oscar II, 1873

The same year that the krona, divided into 100 öre, was introduced with the founding of the Scandinavian Monetary Union, the last coins in the riksdaler riksmynt denomination were issued. One of them is the 2 öre coin on display, minted in 1873. Unlike the new 2 öre coins, this one has the king's portrait on the obverse (front). With the new coins, the king's portrait disappeared from all öre coins, both silver and bronze, forever. Instead, the coins were given the royal cipher or the small coat of arms, as on the 50 öre coins issued between 1992 and 2009.
