Penning, Svealand, Knut Eriksson, 1167–1196
One of Knut Eriksson’s many silver pennings in particular clearly shows the bands hanging down from the crown. These are known as pendilia. We see two on each side here, well executed. On either side of the head, there is also an upraised sword and what is interpreted as a shining sun.
The sword is a symbol of the king as the supreme judge and leader of the kingdom, and is seen on several of Knut Eriksson’s coins. This specimen was probably found on the island of Södermalm in Stockholm in 1676.
