ungersk gyllen, Stockholm, Johan III, 1569
Johan III issued the ungersk gyllen gold coin the year after he became king in 1568. This is the second time ungersk gyllen coins were issued in Sweden. His brother, King Erik XIV, issued the denomination for the first time in 1568.
Johan minted ungersk gyllen coins in two years, 1569 and 1573. The second time, the gold came from the gilding of the melted-down shrine of St Erik from Uppsala Cathedral. Of these coins, only one specimen has been preserved. After that mintage, no ungersk gyllen coins were ever issued again.
