1 mark, Reval, Erik XIV, 1562
Estonia’s capital, Reval, surrendered to Sweden in 1561 because of the threat of a Russian invasion, and Sweden was considered strong enough to protect the country.
Estonia retained its right to issue coins, but at that time Sweden also minted coins in Reval, present-day Tallinn. This coin was issued by Erik XIV, who was the first Swedish king to mint coins in Reval. Swedish minting continued until 1681, when Karl XI was king. Sweden lost Estonia under the Peace of Uusikaupunki (Nystad) in 1721, after the Great Northern War.
