Stockholm, Stockholms Bärare-Gille, 1860-04

The first courier service in Stockholm was established in 1844, the Bärargillet by C.S Ponsbach, whose signature is visible on this paper token from April 1860. The purpose of the guild was to facilitate the transport of travellers' luggage between the city's steamship ports by offering carrying assistance.

This token describes that the holder at the Guild office has paid the fee for the order of two men from the Guild. The token was then supposed to be given to the porters who, after work, returned it to the office for payment in cash.
