Grivna, Novgorod area, circa 1000–1150

Among the silver ingots found in the Övide hoard, there is a fragment of what is known as a grivna. Grivnas are silver ingots with fixed weights that were used as a means of payment in the Kievan Rus' in the period around 1000–1400. This grivna was originally tongue-shaped and probably weighed about 200 grams. The type originates from Novgorod. The presence of grivnas in some Gotlandic hoards dating back to the first half of the 12th century shows that economic contacts with Kievan Rus' increased during this period.
