Gulden, Netherlands, Geldern, Arnold von Egmont

This gold gulden coin has its origins in the medieval principality of Geldern in what we now know as the Netherlands. The coin dated back to the period when Arnold von Egmond was prince (1423–1472).

DVX ARNOLD’ GEL Z IVL Z COMIS Z (= Prince Arnold of Geldern and Jülich, Count of Zutphen) is inscribed around a collection of coats of arms from the territories he ruled. On the other side of the coin, we see a full-length figure of St John the Baptist, whose name (+ S IOHAHNES BATISTA) can be read in the outer ring.
