5 dukat, Stockholm, Gustav II Adolf, 1620

This commemorative coin was probably presented as a gift at the wedding of King Gustav II Adolf and Queen Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg on 25 November 1620 at the Tre kronor Palace in Stockholm. Today, three known examples remain. In addition to the splendour coins that were given to selected people, so-called ‘kastmynt’, or ‘throwing coins’, were also struck in gold and silver. These were to be thrown out to the people standing along the wedding party's route through the city.
