Penning, Svealand, Magnus ladulås, 1275–1290
A capital initial M, which stands for King Magnus Ladulås, appears on this Svealand penning. The letter is surrounded by a radial ring. There are several variants of this penning, some of which have mint marks (a type of symbol) in the form of dots.
Magnus died on Visingsö in 1290. He was succeeded by his son, Birger Magnusson, who introduced two-sided coins (coins with different designs on each side). One of them has an M on one side and a crown on the other. This may be Magnus’s last coin.
Birger Magnusson also implemented a much-needed coin reform, which resulted in the abandonment of the division between Svealand and Götaland, where different coins were used. A common coinage system was introduced instead.
