Penning, Sigtuna, Anund Jakob, circa 1020–1030
The minting of Viking coinage in Sigtuna ceased in around 1030, when Anund Jakob was king. It took about a century for minting to be resumed. Perhaps it was due to political divisions, a shortage of silver, or a decline in trade contacts – nobody knows for sure.
This coin dates back to the end of the Viking-Age coinage in Sigtuna. It resembles English “Pointed Helmet” coins. These get their name from the pointed shape of the helmet.
