Penning, Svealand, Knut Eriksson, 1167–1196

There are several variants of this coin, which shows King Knut carrying an orb and a standard on a pole. The crown is adorned with hanging bands. The king wears a cloak held together with a buckle at one shoulder. Knut reigned from 1167 to 1196.

The orb is usually carried by a king at his coronation and represents worldly power, while the cross represents spiritual authority. The standard represents conquest and victory. Perhaps Knut had been crowned, if so by the archbishop. The coin is of Svealand weight and size. It has a high silver content, 98 per cent.
