Token from Höganäs coal mine

Mining coal in the area around Höganäs has been going on since at least the 16th century. Maria Sofia de la Gardie bought Krapperup Castle in 1667 as part of her support for making the province of Scania a part of Sweden. She also became a mine owner and helped to rationalise mining operations.

The Scanian War, however, put an end to mining at the sites when they were destroyed. Count Erik Ruuth then founded Höganäs Stenkolsverk in 1797. The token is probably from the early 1800s.
