Penning, Svealand, Knut Eriksson, 1167–1196
The crowned royal head is facing forwards on all Swedish coins from the Middle Ages. The only exception is found among Knut Eriksson’s Svealand silver pennings. This is the first time we see the royal image in profile. The crown comes with the usual hanging bands at the neck.
This specimen was part of a hoard found in Mackmyra, Gästrikland in 1930 together with a number of other coins of Svealand weight and size issued for Knut Eriksson, circa 1180 to 1196, when he died.
