Penning, Götaland, Knut Eriksson, 1167–1196

This coin was produced at the Lödöse mint. It shows a head with a crown and the inscription “KANVTVS REX S” (“Knut, King of the Swedes” in Latin) followed by an upraised sword.

The Lödöse mint in Götaland operated for two centuries, from around 1150 to 1350. There, King Knut Eriksson had coins like this one minted, bearing a crowned head and his name. They look completely different from the coins produced in Svealand, although there are coins bearing the king’s head and the name of Knut among them.

It is likely that coins bearing Knut’s name were produced in Götaland before they began to be produced in Sigtuna (in Svealand) in the 1180s.
