2 öre, Åbo, Gustav I Vasa, 1556
Between 1556 and 1558, the last Swedish coinage took place in Turku. The reason was a costly war against Russia that lasted from 1555 to 1557. Square klippe coins were quicker to mint than round coins and were primarily intended to be paid to soldiers who participated on the Swedish side in the war. The mint in Turku produced 16, 8, 4 and 2 öre klippe coins. The 2 öre klippe coin was produced in two different types, one square and one type in rhombic shape.
The square 2 öre in the display case was minted in 1556. The coin shows on the obverse (front) a crowned G for Gustav I and the year of minting. The reverse shows the national symbol three crowns above the denomination 2 öre.
