1 carolin, Stockholm, Karl XV, 1868

Our last ducats were issued until 1868, during the reign of King Karl XV. A brand new gold coin was then issued. These were known as carolines or 10 francs, and the idea of the coin was to link the Swedish currency more closely to the Latin Monetary Union. But this did not happen, and after 1872 we had neither ducats nor carolines. Instead, 20, 10 and 5-krona denominations were issued in gold.

The Latin Monetary Union was established in 1865 between France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland. More countries joined later. The union ended in 1927.
