Penning, Gotland, uncertain authority, circa 1220–1280
Thirteenth-century coins from Gotland rarely bore any kind of inscription. Any wording that was found on them does not help us today to understand where the coins were minted. A triangle of dots has been struck on this coin, with the letter “P” inside. The other side shows a chequered cross. Nobody knows what the letter P represents.
