Penning, Söderköping, Magnus Eriksson, 1354–1363

A mint (moneta in Latin) in Söderköping, Östergötland is mentioned in the 1285 will of Magnus Ladulås. In the 1960s, archaeological excavations along Vintervadsgatan in the city uncovered two lead minting bases. These were residual products from the production of King Magnus Eriksson’s radial bracteates, bearing the initial S for Söderköping. This type dates back to around 1354–1363. Magnus Eriksson was deposed as king the following year.
