Penning, Götaland, Knut Eriksson, 1167–1196

This coin with a crowned head and a pearl ring is unique. Only one of these coins is known to exist, and the place where it was found reveals nothing about its identity. It has been suggested to date that it was issued by King Knut on account of its similarity to other Götaland pennings from the reign of Knut Eriksson.

This coin is a good example of how much research remains to be done on medieval coinage in Sweden.
