1 daler, Stockholm, Erik XIV, 1561

This coin is one of the one- and two-daler coins believed to have been minted for the coronation of King Erik XIV in Uppsala in 1561. The choice of motif for the coin confirms that King Gustav Vasa made Sweden a hereditary kingdom. On the obverse (front) we see Erik XIV with crown, imperial sword and orb, and on the reverse (back) we see his father Gustav Vasa with crown, imperial sword and orb.

The die (the stamp used to strike the design) for the obverse of the coin was later used for Erik's regular thaler coinage and the die for the reverse was the one that had been used for Gustav Vasa's thaler coinage in 1559.
