Dirham, Samanid Empire, Neyshabur, Nasr ibn Ahmad, 935/936
This coin was struck in AD 935/936 in Neyshabur (in present-day Iran) for the Samanid emir Nasr ibn Ahmad. The Samanids were a Persian dynasty that broke away from the Abbasid Caliphate in the second half of the 9th century. Their centre was in Central Asia, east of the Caspian Sea. The name of the Abbasid caliph is nevertheless inscribed on Samanid coins for religious reasons, in this case al-Radi. The name of the Samanid emir follows.
