Penning, Götaland, Valdemar Birgersson, 1250–1275

This coin comes from Götaland and shows King Valdemar wearing a royal crown. An archaeological survey conducted in Örebro in 1978 revealed remains of the production of this type of coin in the form of what were known as lead underlays.

Many pennings of this type were part of a silver hoard found by a farmer and his mother at Brunnsgården, Östergötland in 1786.

Valdemar was the son of Birger Jarl and grandson of King Erik Knutsson. Although Valdemar was the king of Sweden, his father effectively ruled the country. Birger Jarl died in 1266 and Valdemar remained in power until 1275.
