Penning, unknown mint, Magnus Eriksson, 1360s
Coins with a smooth ring and the letters E, H, L and S were probably issued during the last year of Magnus Eriksson’s reign, in around 1360 to 1364, and perhaps for a short time afterwards. His successor on the throne was Albrecht of Mecklenburg, who had his own coins minted.
These bracteate (one-sided) coins have a high silver content. The coin you see here bears the letter H. We do not know what this letter means, nor do we know where these coins were struck. Half-pennings with the same letters are also found.
