Penning, uncertain authority, ca 1300–1325

In this display, you can see a penning depicting a head with a royal crown. This coin type was found in a mass grave from the Battle of Visby in the summer of 1361. A leather pouch found among the buried warriors contained 385 coins. Most of them date back to the last year of King Magnus Eriksson’s reign. Magnus was King of Sweden from 1319 to 1364.

However, this coin has been dated to the period 1300–1325, and is therefore much older than the other coins found in the leather pouch. Why was there just one penning of this age among other coins? Should it not have been out of circulation by that time? Or had it been issued recently? We do not know the answer as yet.
