Penning, Svealand, uncertain ruler, cirka 1210–1220
Penning with a large cross, from the centre of which another cross with stars at the tips emerges. This coin, which is of Svealand weight, may have been issued by the Archbishop of Uppsala in around 1190 to 1210.
However it may also have been issued by a king. Erik Knutsson was the son of Knut Eriksson and seized power by defeating Sverker Karlsson, his predecessor on the throne, in 1208. Erik died in 1216.
This specimen was found in a large hoard in northern Germany in 1928. The hoard also included other coins from the same period, including those with a large cross and the letters AROS.
