1/2 örtug, Västerås, Sten Sture d.ä., 1470–1497, 1501–1503
This coin was minted after 1478, during the governorship of Sten Sture the Elder. The crowned letter “A”, together with the inscription MONETA AROSIS (= Coin of Västerås) indicates where the coin was minted.
During the time of Sten Sture, a year appeared for the first time on coins made in Stockholm from 1478 onwards. However, this was based on the year in which the coinage system was established, and not specifically on the year of issue of individual coins. Västerås had a coinage system from 1480, which may be indicated by the number 8 that appears in two places in the outer inscription in the picture.
