Coin finds from Källa Old Church, Öland, period 1150–1250
These coins from Källa church on Öland date back to the earliest days of the church. The number of coins from this period is limited. This suggests that few coins were in use at that time, and that they were only used by the wealthiest people in society. Farmers, on the other hand, paid mainly with merchandise such as butter or livestock.
All coins from this period were minted on Gotland – probably in Visby. They are small, weigh about 0.17 g and have a high silver content. Gotlandic coins dominated the circulation on Öland and throughout the Diocese of Linköping.
