Penning, Götaland, Karl Sverkersson, 1161–1167

This type of coin is occasionally found in Sweden. In Norway, there are many variants of the same type.

Coins with these single crosses can be dated to the time of Karl Sverkersson in the 1160s. He was the son of Sverker the Elder. In Lödöse, traces of the production of similar coins have been found in the form of what were known as coin production underlays.

It is possible that the mint in Lödöse also received orders from Norway. Bohuslän, which was then part of Norway, is situated north of Lödöse. Research into these coins still needs to be done in order to find out whether this was the case.
