Taler, Joachimstal, 1520–1525
The coin you see in the display case is a taler minted at the Joachimstal mint. The taler became an international trade coin based on the fact that the coin had to have a certain silver content and weight. The taler was minted in different countries and at different times. The Swedish daler originated from the taler, as did the US dollar. The taler was first minted in 1518 in Joachimstal in Bohemia in the present-day Czech Republic. The motif on the obverse is the saint St Joachim and the reverse shows the Bohemian lion.
