Penning, Götaland, Sverker Karlsson, 1196–1208

This coin, which shows a full-length lion walking with its head proudly raised, is thought to have been minted for King Sverker Karlsson. He was the son of Karl Sverkersson, who was killed in 1167 when Knut Eriksson took over as king. Sverker, in turn, became king after the death of Knut Eriksson and reigned between 1196 and 1208.

This coin was minted in Lödöse in Götaland, but a similar motif appears on two coins of Svealand weight and size which were probably found in Västmanland. Whether those are Swedish or Norwegian is unclear.
