Penning, Svealand, Valdemar Birgersson, 1250–1275

A crowned head was the most common way to show that the king issued coins. A variant of the coin you see here was struck in Örebro under King Valdemar.

There were different coinage standards in different parts of the country at this time. That is why it is puzzling that this coin – which is of Götaland weight – was made in Örebro, which is in Svealand.

The mint in Örebro, which was discovered during archaeological excavations, had been commissioned by the king to strike coins according to both the Svealand and the Götaland coinage standards. A standardised coinage standard in both areas was introduced in the late 13th century.
