Adolf Fredrik and Ulrika Eleonora's reward medal for skilled spinners
During the 18th century, it became more common to reward and encourage people with a medal when they performed various kinds of services. In 1751, King Adolf Fredrik and Queen Lovisa Ulrika decided that a medal should be minted, issued and awarded to skilful spinners.
On the back of the medal, we see a woman sitting at a so-called upright wheel, which is a spinning wheel where the spindle or flyer is placed directly above the spinning wheel. The upright wheel was mainly used for spinning flax and for winding yarn onto bobbins for weaving.
