Medal of Nils Ericsson

When the railway network was to be expanded in the mid-19th century, the experienced canal and railway builder Nils Ericson from Filipstad was commissioned to lead the work. Work began in 1855 and the first sod was turned in 1856.

First in line was the construction of the western and southern main lines. Work went according to plan and in 1862 the first train on the western main line, the Stockholm – Gothenburg section, rolled into Gothenburg station.

Nils Ericson believed that the great distances in Sweden required good railway lines and fast trains.
