2/3 riksdaler, Stralsund, Karl XII, 1707

In 1637, Sweden captured the city of Stralsund during the 30 Years’ War. The city became Swedish with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.

Stralsund had the right to mint its own coins since the 14th century, and the coins issued during the Swedish period between 1637 and 1815 bore neither the name nor the portrait of the Swedish sovereign. Instead, the coins bore German symbols such as the German Imperial Eagle, the name of the German Emperor and the Stralsund coat of arms, an arrowhead. On the coin presented here, we see the arrow and can see the inscription MONETA NOVA STRALSUNDENSIS – the new coin of Stralsund.
