1 riksdaler, Stockholm, Gustav IV Adolf, 1801
King Gustav IV Adolf published three types of riksdaler coins with different portraits. When the first portrait was widely criticised, a new one was quickly produced. A few years later came the third and that is what we can see in the exhibition.
Here, Gustav IV Adolf is wearing armour, which has been common on coins since the reign of King Gustav Vasa. But with Gustav IV Adolf, that tradition ends. What he does begin is to print his royal title in Swedish, a tradition that continues to this day.
