1 riksdaler, Karl IX, 1608

This is one of the first riksdaler to be struck in Sweden. Since 1604, the daler, introduced by King Gustav Vasa in 1534, had become the riksdaler. Like the daler, the riksdaler was minted for international use. It was not until 1776 that the riksdaler was included in the Swedish coinage.

The riksdaler was also called the ‘struck daler’, as opposed to the 4-mark coin, which was called the ‘Swedish daler’ or just ‘daler’, because at the end of the 16th century, 4 marks had the same value as a daler. However, the denomination of the coin was mark.
