3 dukat, Riga, Kristina, 1643

This coin dating back to 1643 shows Queen Kristina in the year before she came of age and was able to take over the rule of Sweden from the regency government.

The obverse (front) shows a portrait of Kristina together with an inscription in Latin:

Kristina D(ei) G(ratia) SUE(corum) GOT(horum), VAN(dalorum) Q(ue) DE(signata) REGI(na) ET PRINCIP(issa) HAE(reditaria) – Kristina, by the grace of God, Queen and Hereditary Princess of the Swedes, the Goths and the Wend.

On the reverse (back) we see the coat of arms of the city of Riga: a city gate with a lion’s head, above the gate two crossed keys and a cross. At the sides of the coat of arms are two lions holding the shield. At the bottom is the inscription H W, the initials of mintmaster Henrik Wulff.
